This is not a degree scholarship. You do not study for a qualification, and you do not need to apply to a university course. You join an existing programme run by a UK host organisation, build a specific skill set, and return to the job you already hold to apply it. If you are a professional with five or more years of experience, or an academic with a PhD and a university post, this is one of the few fully funded UK opportunities designed for people already established in their careers.

What is the Commonwealth Fellowship Programme?
The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK runs a family of awards funded by the UK Government. Most people know the Commonwealth Scholarships, which fund full master’s and PhD degrees. The Fellowship Programme is different, and considerably less well known, which is part of why it is worth your attention.
From the 2026/27 cycle onward, the CSC has restructured its fellowship offering into a single Commonwealth Fellowship Programme with two strands.
Commonwealth Professional Fellowships are for mid-career professionals from eligible Commonwealth countries other than the UK. You undertake a programme of professional development at a UK host organisation working in your sector.
Commonwealth Academic Fellowships are a new strand. They are for academic staff who hold a PhD and are employed at a university in an eligible Commonwealth country other than the UK. The purpose is an academic skills update, knowledge exchange and networking, with a view to establishing future research collaboration at a UK university.
One change matters a great deal for African applicants. In previous cycles, Professional Fellowships were restricted to a published list of lower and middle income Commonwealth countries. For 2026/27, the CSC states that both strands are open to candidates from all Commonwealth countries. If your country was excluded in an earlier round, check again.
What the Commonwealth Fellowship covers
Each fellowship provides:
- Approved return airfare from your home country to the UK
- Reimbursement of the standard visa application fee
- A monthly stipend of £2,218, or £2,753 for those at organisations in the London metropolitan area, payable monthly or pro rata for the duration of the award. These are 2025/26 rates and are subject to review.
- An arrival allowance of up to £1,247.09 at 2025/26 rates, which includes an element for warm clothing
- Additional programme costs. Fees can be agreed for short courses, conferences and travel to visit other UK organisations where these form an integral part of your programme. Placements of six weeks to two months can claim up to £1,000, and placements of two to three months can claim up to £2,000. These funds are paid directly to the host organisation, not to you.
- Disability support. If you declare a disability, the CSC offers a full assessment of needs and eligibility for additional financial support.
On a three month London placement, the stipend alone comes to roughly £8,250, before airfare, visa reimbursement and the arrival allowance. The total package for a full length placement is comfortably above £10,000.
What it does not cover
- Dependants. The funding is for the Fellow. Family members are not covered for travel, visas or living costs.
- Anything outside the UK. Professional Fellowships are tenable in the UK only. Fellows must seek permission from both their CSC Programme Officer and their host organisation before travelling outside the UK for any reason, and permission is granted only in exceptional circumstances.
- Academic study. This is not a route into a UK degree. See the eligibility section below.
Who can apply
All applicants, in both strands, must:
- Be a citizen of, or have been granted refugee status by, an eligible Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person
- Be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country. You should not hold indefinite leave to remain in the UK.
- Be in employment at the time of application, at an organisation you will return to when the fellowship ends
- Provide at least two references, one of which must be from your current employer. Applications where references are not received are treated as ineligible.
- Not have undertaken a Commonwealth Fellowship within the last five years, measured at the point of taking up the award
- Be available to start on the prescribed dates set out by the host organisation
Then, depending on your strand:
Professional Fellows must have at least five years of full-time relevant work experience, or the part-time equivalent, in a profession related to the subject of the fellowship programme, by the proposed start date. Voluntary work experience does not count toward this minimum.
Academic Fellows must hold a PhD and be employed by a university in a Commonwealth country other than the UK.
The disqualifier most applicants miss
The Professional Fellowship is not a research opportunity. Historically the CSC has been explicit that candidates must not be seeking to undertake an academic programme of research or study in the UK. Academics have been eligible to apply to the professional strand, but only for programmes of academic management, not for research or courses relevant to their research subject. If you are an academic wanting to do research, the Academic Fellowship strand is now the correct route. Applying to the wrong strand is an avoidable way to lose an application.
The employment requirement is also stricter than it first appears. You must be employed now, and you must be returning to that same organisation. If you are between jobs, or planning to change employer before early 2027, you have a problem to solve before you apply.
Which African countries are eligible?
This is the point where most listings of this fellowship mislead African readers, so it is worth stating plainly.
The Commonwealth Fellowship is open to Commonwealth member countries only. Membership of the Commonwealth, not geography, decides eligibility.
African Commonwealth member states include:
Botswana, Cameroon, Eswatini, Gabon, The Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda and Zambia.
If your country is not a Commonwealth member, you cannot apply. That includes Egypt, Ethiopia, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Angola, Sudan, Somalia, Zimbabwe and others. There is no exception, no waiver, and no benefit in applying anyway. If you are in one of those countries, Chevening is the more realistic UK route, and it is open until 6 October 2026.
Commonwealth membership does change. Gabon and Togo joined in 2022, which is why they appear above despite having no British colonial history. Confirm your own country on the CSC website before you invest time in an application.
Development themes
Applications are assessed on how far your proposed fellowship transfers skills relevant to the CSC’s six development themes:
- Science and technology for development
- Strengthening health systems and capacity
- Promoting innovation and entrepreneurship
- Strengthening global peace, security and governance
- Strengthening resilience and response to crises
- Access, inclusion and opportunity
Your application must connect explicitly to at least one of these. This is not a formality. The CSC is a development funder, and a proposal framed around your own career progression rather than development impact at home reads as a mismatch with the programme’s purpose.
How to apply
1. Start from the host organisation programmes tab. This is the step that separates successful applicants from the rest, and it is the step most listings omit entirely. You are not proposing your own programme. Each host organisation runs a defined programme with its own theme, dates and candidate profile. Details for every host running a 2027 programme are published on the host organisation programmes tab of the CSC fellowship page. Read them before you write anything.
Reported host organisations for the 2027 round span physics, chemistry, geoscience, healthcare, cancer therapeutics, prosthetics, entrepreneurship, governance and community development. Academic hosts have included institutions such as Oxford, Imperial College London, Bath, Bradford and Reading. Professional hosts have included the British Geological Survey, University College London, the University of Strathclyde, the Royal College of Emergency Medicine and London North West University Healthcare Trust. Treat these as indicative and check the current tab for the definitive list.
2. Check the dates for your chosen programme. Each host sets its own window. Reporting on the 2027 round indicates professional placements beginning between mid-February and mid-March 2027 and running six weeks to three months, with academic placements beginning in January or February 2027 and running three months. Confirm the exact dates with the host before applying, because you must be available for their window specifically.
3. Register on the CSC online application system at portal.csccentralonline.org.uk. Verify your email address using the code sent during registration.
4. Complete the application form. You will be asked to:
- List all undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications
- List up to ten publications and prizes, if applicable
- Give your employment history, explaining how each role is relevant to the programme you want to undertake, in up to 100 words per role
- Write a statement on the relevance of your previous work experience to the proposed fellowship, in up to 300 words
- Write a development impact statement in parts, explaining how the fellowship relates to one of the six CSC development themes and to development issues at global, national and local level, and how you will apply your new skills once the fellowship ends
- Provide a personal statement and a statement covering voluntary activity and leadership
- Name two to three referees qualified to comment on both your capacity to benefit and your ability to deliver development impact afterwards. One must be your current employer.
5. Submit before 16:00 BST on 25 August 2026. The CSC cannot accept applications or documentation submitted by any other route, including email. Late applications are not accepted.
Application tips
Pick the host first, then write to them. Every strong application reads as though it were written for one specific programme, because it was. Generic applications that could have been sent to any host do not survive assessment.
Show the chain, not the ambition. The CSC wants to see: the problem you face now, the training the fellowship gives you, the capability that results, what you will do on return, who benefits, and what measurable change follows. Write that sequence explicitly. A statement about how much the experience would mean to you does not answer the question being asked.
Use the return-to-employer requirement as an asset. You must go back to your current organisation, so explain what that organisation lets you do with the new skills. Can you train colleagues, redesign a process, introduce a system, build an institutional partnership, improve a service? Concrete platforms make impact claims credible.
Do the work experience arithmetic honestly. Five years, full-time or part-time equivalent, in a profession related to the fellowship subject, by the start date. Voluntary work does not count. This is checked.
Brief your employer referee early. One of your references must come from your current employer, and a missing reference makes your application ineligible outright. Ask now, not in the final week, and tell your referee exactly what the CSC is assessing.
Do not treat this as a backdoor to UK study or migration. The programme is built on the expectation that you return. Applications that read otherwise fail.
Commonwealth Fellowship or Commonwealth Scholarship?
These are frequently confused, and they are not alternatives for the same person.

If you want a UK degree, the Fellowship is not your route. If you already have the career and want the skills, it is a far better fit than a scholarship, and considerably less competitive.

Do I need to find my own host organisation?

Which visa do Commonwealth Fellows use?
Fellows come to the UK on a Temporary Work, Government Authorised Exchange visa. The host organisation acts as visa sponsor and is responsible for record keeping, monitoring and reporting in line with immigration regulations. The CSC provides confirmation of funding to confirmed Fellows and their hosts. Immigration rules are set by UK Visas and Immigration and can change at any time.
Can I bring my family?
The funding covers the Fellow only. Airfare, stipend and allowances do not extend to dependants, and you would need to fund any family travel and living costs yourself.
